Carnival Jubilee marks the debut of Carnival Cruise Line’s newest Excel Class ship, which offers exciting new spaces for guests unique to the 6,500-guest vessel. These include the underwater-themed Currents zone, a two-deck-high promenade with a massive wave-shaped LED ceiling, six LED windows, show lighting, and an immersive sound system.
The goal was to create a stunning space between the ship’s theatre and dining area where guests could be immersed in a sea of sound, light and media while also being able to transform the space in fun ways.
To help achieve this vision, Carnival assembled a team of experts: Infinite World Studios and batwin+robin productions for media, Brian Monahan to produce the show lighting, Clay Tipton for D3 show programming, David Gregory to create immersive sound design, Raven Sun Creative for creative design input, and Beaudry Interactive to help create a zone-wide activations.
“We designed the Currents zone on Carnival Jubilee as a transformative and immersive space, using innovative technology and imaginative storytelling to transport guests to whimsical underwater environments,” says Glenn Aprile, senior director of brand experience and product development at Carnival Cruise Line.
“We are pleased to have partnered with Beaudry Interactive to create unique interactive activations. It is a joy to watch as guests of all ages connect with each other and enjoy the zone”.
Beaudry Interactive created three interactive activities for the Currents zone that operate at various times and days on the 7-day voyage to add to the fun and offer fresh ways to engage guests. Each interactive uses a specialised tablet or kiosk to control behind-the-scenes operations, making the experience accessible for guests.

Giving the guests influence over the environment was made possible by Beaudry Interactive’s cutting-edge behind-the-scenes show control system, Diva. Thanks to this technology, the immersive underwater-themed zone invites guests not only to control the media on six enormous media “windows” but also to activate the entire two-story deck area by controlling the environmental lighting and the surrounding soundscape.
With all experiences having to start and end inside a specific multi-day cruise timetable and operate with little, if any, personnel input, Diva also assisted in addressing unique scheduling and staffing issues.
In the Change the Currents experience, visitors can transform the area into six different aquatic worlds brought to life by Infinite World Studios. The underwater scenes portrayed on the enormous digital windows and ceiling, as well as the colours and sounds the visitors see and hear—all inspired by nature—change the area’s ambience.
Meanwhile, the Virtual Aquarium Experience combines a cinematic seascape with the fun of building your own marine creature and witnessing it magically come to life on the screens, enjoyable for both kids and kids-at-heart. Carnival guests can build fish from the kiosk, choosing body forms, fins, colours, and eyes.
Kids can also use bespoke marine animal colouring papers and markers to express their creativity without screens. After finishing, their fish are scanned and added to the Virtual Aquarium’s colourful guest fish schools.
On the lowest level of this two-story interactive, a playful spotlight shines every few minutes. Guests that step into the light unleash a playful localised aquarium takeover with media, lighting, sound, and music. Guests might be surprised by the appearance of rubber ducks on their way to the Seacation resort, see their favourite sea life perform, or be greeted by a friendly scuba diver.
“SoundWaves” is a nighttime show that completely takes over the Currents Zone and elevates the concept of a jukebox to a whole new level. Through this interactive, visitors can select the music they want to hear along with the show they want to watch by matching the song with lighting and digital visual effects. Their visualiser effects and lighting design queue up in response to the chosen song, creating a unique spectacle that brings the music’s beats to life with various dynamic visuals and light.
Finally, Beaudry Interactive’s touch-screen interactive map, Jubilee Atlas, allows visitors to explore ships and locations worldwide while engaging in a deeper, more contemplative experience within the Currents Zone.
Featuring a live fleet, the map shows the whereabouts of Carnival ships in real time, as well as their future destinations. Visitors can watch fascinating, educational animations that capture the thrill of travel, discover fun facts about aquatic life from around the globe, and dive deep into the fascinating wonders of their ocean cruise, uncovering the mysteries and marvels beneath the waves.
“I’m incredibly proud of the creativity and technical expertise our team brought to this project,” says David Beaudry, principal at Beaudry Interactive.
“Not only do I feel we hit it out of the park with the design and realisation of these experiences, the level of engagement and collaboration with all the teams involved in the Currents zone was something very unique. Seeing how enthusiastically the guests react and engage with the space throughout the day is a testament to the specialness of this team.”
Andrei Graunte, creative director at Infinite World Studios, adds: “Having partnered with Carnival for many years on entertainment and experience design, we understood that Currents needed to stand out with exceptional quality and stability. The customized system architecture incorporates cutting-edge technology and innovation to create beautiful, functional experiences that connect with Carnival’s guests 24/7 throughout their cruise.
“The underwater world scenes seamlessly blend CGI and realistic visuals, while spatial sound and lighting design deliver a truly immersive, impactful experience. When media displays are this large and close to the audience, every pixel and detail matter. We’re thrilled with how it all came together.”

In a recent interview featured in Restaurant Development + Design Magazine, Callin Fortis of Bigtime Design Studios shares his insights on the latest trends and challenges in restaurant design. As a leading figure in the industry, Fortis discusses the importance of experiential design, the role of AI in the creative process, and the growing trend towards custom product sourcing. The full article, titled “Designers Dish 2024,” includes perspectives from other top designers like Jessica Haley of RODE Architecture, Mike Mora of Heliotrope Architects, and Lori Mukoyama of Gensler. Below, we’ve highlighted the questions and answers featuring Callin Fortis. For the full discussion with all the designers, you can read the complete article here.

What’s in? What’s out? What’s promising to shape or reshape how designers think about restaurant projects in an environment in which providing good value and great experiences are mission critical for restaurant brands? For insights on trends and strategies, we turned to four veteran designers and architects leading studios large and small, from the Pacific Northwest to the Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast. Each is well-versed in the art and science of transforming empty spaces and nascent concepts into alluring and vibrant restaurants.
Fortis: On a macro level, it’s the need for experiential design, which is tightly connected to social media. Restaurants have to check more boxes today than great food, service, and atmosphere. I call it the two-minute moment, and we have to design for it. We get about 120 seconds for a guest to walk in, check out a space, and have that sort of wow moment. And then it has to last for 90 to 120 minutes, which involves front-to-backdoor experiential design—façade, uniforms, plating, service, restrooms, decor, lighting, acoustics, all the details. Even chefs and menu developers now carefully consider the colors of the food, the colors and styles of the plates, etc., in terms of how they’ll photograph. When people take pictures of their food to share on social media, those images need to reflect the right je ne sais quoi of the restaurant.
Fortis: Cliche culture. If I see one more pink neon sign with a cute saying or angel wings without a head on the wall as a backdrop for selfies, I’ll scream. Those sorts of pop, throwaway moments have been done to death, but we still have clients who just want to know where that Instagram moment is. It makes it challenging, and even more important for designers to get clients to understand the importance of brand mission, which connects to brand and design narrative. The tighter that is, the easier and more authentic the so-called Instagram moments can and should be.
Fortis: Initially, a lot of creative people, me included, were scared of it. But we’re using it and learning to see it as another tool, and one that’s very cool. On a recent project, we used AI to help us create a muse on which the whole brand and design narrative are based. We plugged in every detail we could about this person we dreamed up, along with a very tight brand strategic framework, and the character that the system generated was spot on. It was better and faster than what we’d been able to come up with on our own, and the buy-in we got on it helped drive every decision. But there’s also a lot it can’t do, like specify and create construction documents, at least not yet.
Fortis: We’re seeing huge growth in our ability to source custom products, often from outside the U.S., that are equal to or better than what we could traditionally specify. It has become a complete industry in and of itself and the impact on what we can design is huge. We used to be limited to some degree by our database of resources; you couldn’t go to them for just one of anything. Now, you can do almost a whole restaurant custom. And it’s affordable and deliverable.
Fortis: Invest time in development. Everyone’s in a big rush to get to construction documents. They’re paying rent and want to get open, but when they rush into construction they inevitably start asking for changes, and that’s expensive and a headache. A saying I like to use is, ‘If you had the money to do it twice, you had the money to do it right the first time.’

Something new is coming to Orlando, and it promises a brighter Orlando dating scene! The highly-anticipated Brightline Train is practically ready to ride at Terminal C at the Orlando International Airport. And, it’s going to change everything for the better. Let’s get down to the details.
Brightline Orlando service is slated to open on September 22, 2023.
Currently serving locations in South Florida, the Brightline Train is a fast, eco-friendly, intercity rail option, designed to connect destinations and make travel more convenient. All the trains in the Brightline fleet have diesel-electric engines, powered by FPL clean biodiesel, which leads to lower emissions and reduced noise.
Once Brightline Florida service in Orlando begins at the end of September 2023 the train will travel at 125 mph. It is estimated that it will take just about 2 hours to travel West Palm Beach from Orlando.
As expansions continue, Brightline promises to connect Tampa to its rail system for even more interstate accessibility.
The newest Brightline Station measures 37,350 square feet, and is located in the new Terminal C at MCO. Designed by Bigtime Design Studios of Miami, the station is bright and spacious, with the comfort of guests in mind. It’s easy to book tickets and reserve parking spaces using the Brightline app, and travelers can use that same app to enter the area via touch-free turnstiles.
Complimentary Wi-Fi in the station and onboard provides guests the ability to telecommute, research their destination, or complete any online tasks. While waiting for their departure, passengers can enjoy refreshments at the Mary Mary bar, or purchase snacks and drinks at the >>MRKT convenience store.
PREMIUM ticket holders have the opportunity to take advantage of the exclusive PREMIUM lounges while they wait.
Once onboard the Brightline, passengers find themselves treated to a smooth, quiet ride to one of several destinations.
At the moment, these bold, yellow trains travel between the following South Florida cities, with about 20 minutes in between each.
Guests have their choice of SMART or PREMIUM tickets, and while both offer plenty of amenities, PREMIUM definitely takes things to the next level. All riders can take advantage of free high-powered Wi-Fi, power and USB outlets, and hand-stitched leather seats.
SMART riders can purchase snacks and drinks on board, but PREMIUM guests get complimentary refreshments, as well as access to the exclusive lounge in the station, and a signature pre-boarding experience.
All the trains in the Brightline fleet are ADA-accessible, and easy to board for wheelchairs and strollers alike. While you can check bags, there is also plenty of room to stow carry-on luggage, and even bikes. Want your pet to join you on your journey? Perfect!
These trains are pet-friendly, and welcome your furry companion, too! All passengers have access to clean, innovative restrooms, which is perfect for freshening up after travel.
The new Brightline station promises a brighter Orlando dating scene. While Orlando is full of incredible date nights, now it’s easy (and economical) to branch out and explore without driving or expensive flights.
Orlando couples can head out for spontaneous weekends shopping, exploring, cheering at sporting events, attending the theater, or even enjoying dining experiences that were once too far away.
Service from Orlando will connect to West Palm Beach. Your travel will take about 2 hours from Orlando to West Palm Beach. From there you can connect to additional South Florida destinations.
Date night ideas now include impromptu photo shoots at the Wynwood Walls or shopping in the Miami Design District. Aventura Mall promises luxury retail, or you can hit up the races at Gulfstream Park. In Ft. Lauderdale, check out the dining on Las Olas, the beach, or visit one of the many museums near the Brightline station.
Stop in Boca Raton for shopping or a concert in Mizner Park. And West Palm Beach offers plenty of delicious restaurants, more museums, and a theater for Broadway shows. There’s so much to do, and now it’s all so much more accessible!
Travel time also becomes part of the date experience, as Brightline passengers can sit back and relax rather than drive or navigate transportation. Train travel gives a nod to old-time romance, and brings a greater sense of adventure to the night or weekend out.
No more traffic or worrying about lost luggage and missed connections: instead, hop on board this full-service railway and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
The Brightline makes it possible for Orlando couples to add so many more experiences to their dating bucket list, all in three hours or less!

Brightline, a provider of modern, eco-friendly, intercity rail in America, unveiled its Brightline Orlando Station at Orlando International Airport (MCO). With Brightline’s signature yellow and spacious lounges, the station is the backdrop for a new era of passenger rail that will connect two of the fastest growing regions in the state: Central and South Florida.
“When Brightline begins its comfortable rail passenger service at Orlando International Airport, it will improve mobility between two of the state’s bustling regions and Orlando International will be the only airport in the nation with an intercity high-speed passenger rail station. Passengers who arrive or depart from Orlando International will have another option to connect to and from South Florida, bringing to fruition a multimodal vision first embraced in the airport’s original design criteria decades ago. We’re excited to be partners with Brightline for this transformative moment in transportation,” said Kevin Thibault, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.
Brightline’s Orlando expansion is an essential piece of a private infrastructure project connecting millions of riders between Central and South Florida. Service will begin in Summer 2023 and will include 16 daily round trips with hourly departures between Miami and Orlando. Brightline’s non-stop trains have a run time between Miami and Orlando of two hours and 59 minutes. Regular service from Orlando to Miami will stop at all Brightline stations including West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Aventura with a run time of three hours and 30 minutes.
The new station is designed and built through the lens of today’s modern traveler. The 37,350-square-foot station is located in Orlando International Airport’s new 80,000 sq. ft. Train Station facility adjacent to Terminal C. The Train Station connects directly to the airport’s Parking Garage C, which will have more than 350 parking spaces branded for Brightline guests. MY HUSBAND HAS ALWAYS LOVED TRAINS, so when he heard Brightline was offering service to Miami, he wanted to book a day trip. His goal: Get off the train in Miami, grab lunch and return home the same day.
With 16 departures to and from Miami daily, that’s doable. But why not go all in? We now had an excuse to become reacquainted with a city we hadn’t visited in decades, partly because of the drive there and back. Let’s be real. Who wants to drive to and from Miami? No one I know. But who wants to ride comfortably in a high-speed train that frees you up to take in the scenery, grab a nap or fit in some work? Need to stretch your legs? Walk around. Need a bathroom break? Take a short walk down the aisle. Need a snack or drink? The cart is coming your way.

Passengers booking Premium tickets have access to the Premium Lounge, complimentary snacks and beverages, priority boarding, and more. Photo by Emily Jourdan
Start by booking your Brightline trip. Smart, or business-class, fares begin at $79 one way per person. Premium, or first-class, fares begin at $149 per person. To compare the experiences, we booked Premium seats on the way to Miami and Smart seats on the way home. Premium tickets include access to the station’s Premium Lounge, where you can enjoy free breakfast, lunch or dinner items, along with free beverages.
Two alcoholic beverages are included. Premium tickets also include a free checked bag and free food on the train, where frequent feedings ensure a hobbit would be in his element. Passengers with Smart tickets have access to their own lounge at the station. Food, beverages and checked baggage—$25 per bag— are all at an additional cost. The leather-covered seats are slightly narrower, and you may find yourself sharing a four-person table with strangers if you don’t choose a two-seat row. That said, we were just as comfortable in our Smart coach as we were in our Premium coach, though less pampered. Both coaches offered plenty of leg room, and trays and tables easily accommodate laptops. Each seat also provides device-charging stations. Plus, all cars generally offer plenty of overhead storage for luggage and include a standing rack for larger bags. It’s also important to note each coach offers level boarding and is fully ADA-compliant, with wide aisles and accessible seating and bathrooms, which are also touch-free. Accessibility is a win for families with strollers and wheelchair-bound passengers.
Our trains were on schedule, each trip taking roughly 3 ½ hours with brief stops in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Aventura. But what you may not save in time, you’re saving in sanity and, possibly, safety. And don’t forget, you can make good use of your travel time, unlike when you’re driving.

Experience the epitome of California cool at L’Auberge Del Mar, a coastal haven transformed by the artistic touch of BigTime Design Studio. Uncover the resort’s rich history, from its days as a Hollywood celebrity retreat to the recent 2021 renovation led by our design team. Discover luxurious suites, dramatic coastal views, and impeccable design that earned it a spot among the best hotels in California in Travel + Leisure’s 2022 World’s Best Awards.
READ THE TRAVEL + LEISURE ARTICLE BELOW!
Roughly 20 miles north of San Diego along the Southern California coastline lies the village of Del Mar, a tiny beachside community with a vibrant surf culture and quaint small-town vibes. And there’s no place that encapsulates the laid-back luxury of this destination more than L’Auberge Del Mar, a coastal resort that feels more like a dreamy vacation home than a standard hotel.
The resort sits on a piece of land long considered a cornerstone of the Del Mar community. The property was home to the Stafford Inn, a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities in the early to mid-1900s. A-listers such as Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and Jimmy Durante frequented the hotel to escape the hustle and bustle of Tinseltown. While the property experienced many changes over the years, the most significant transformation happened in 1985, when a local resident bought the land, opening the doors of L’Auberge Del Mar in 1989. Since then, the property has undergone two major renovations, most recently in 2021 under the direction of BigTime Design.
Today, the resort is infused with California cool at every turn, encompassing 5.2 acres of lush grounds atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Guests can easily walk to the beach via a private path or hitch a ride from the resort’s golf cart valet service. The rooms all have beachy decor and a private balcony to enjoy partial views of the ocean, resort pool, or bustling village streets. The warm neutral tones are offset by bright white crown molding. And the plush bedding with crisp white accents make a nice backdrop for the pops of ocean blues in the artwork. This bright and airy design exudes coastal serenity.
The lobby is far more luxurious than a living room, but it somehow manages to feel like one. Its comfy couches, live music, and Living Room Bar invite guests to relax and hang out for a while. Next to the lobby is Adelaide, the property’s signature restaurant. Situated on an elevated deck above the pool with dramatic sunset views, it features menus that are “both ocean-forward and rooted in the earth.” And thanks to a strong relationship with local fishermen and farmers, Adelaide uses fresh and responsibly sourced ingredients in their dishes.
One of the property’s most impressive amenities is the spa, which features 10 treatment rooms, herbal-infused steam rooms, and an indoor-outdoor relaxation area with a fire pit, lush greenery, and various refreshments. Another highlight is the pool — the on-site restaurant is only steps away and guests can soak up views of the Pacific Ocean while taking a swim. There are also cabanas (available for a fee) that include comfy sofas, a TV, refrigerator, and most importantly, complimentary chips and guac.
Voted as one of the best hotels in California in Travel + Leisure’s 2022 World’s Best Awards, L’Auberge Del Mar is the perfect choice for travelers seeking a quintessential Golden State getaway with a view. Learn more about booking your stay here.

This event marked a pivotal moment not only for Brightline, but also for American transportation as a whole. Undoubtedly, Florida residents, especially those in Orlando, stand to benefit immensely from the advantages this type of transportation offers.
The new Brightline Orlando Station serves as an epitome of 21st-century passenger rail travel. Sporting Brightline’s signature yellow hues and spacious lounges, the station introduces an era of enhanced connectivity for the rapidly expanding regions of Central and South Florida. The station boasts a meticulous design, crafted with the modern traveler in mind, offering a blend of efficiency, convenience, and comfort.
The unveiling of the Brightline Orlando Station was met with applause from elected officials, dignitaries, and community leaders alike, signaling the station’s transformative potential for Florida’s transportation landscape. The station, located at the heart of one of America’s busiest airports, stands as a testament to the union of innovation and practicality.
Experiencing the new station goes beyond traditional transportation services. Brightline offers a holistic, immersive journey for its passengers, starting the moment they step into the main entrance. The station’s features include a wide array of amenities, such as the Mary Mary Bar with its hand-crafted cocktails, the retail experience at MRKT PLACE, and BrightKids, a dedicated children’s play area.
Moreover, Brightline differentiates its service offerings into SMART and PREMIUM categories. The PREMIUM service provides additional perks like complimentary meals, a dedicated first-class lounge, free checked luggage, priority boarding, and a dedicated coach. Throughout the station, passengers can also enjoy free high-speed Wi-Fi, multiple charging stations, and numerous big screen televisions.
The Orlando to South Florida train schedule from Brightline presents an ambitious transportation plan, providing 16 daily round trips with hourly departures between Miami and Orlando. This service ensures seamless mobility for millions of riders between Central and South Florida.

Travelers enjoy the Mary Mary Bar’s modern and open atmosphere.
Brightline’s Orlando expansion embodies a bold, private infrastructure project that is set to revolutionize Florida’s intercity connectivity. The service, slated to begin September 1, promises to deliver expedited travel times and widespread access to major Florida cities.
The design of the Brightline Orlando Station was entrusted to Bigtime Design Studios, a Miami-based architecture firm that has previously designed other Brightline stations. The buildout was managed by Gomez Construction Co., an Orlando-based, minority-owned business.
In tandem with this groundbreaking expansion, Brightline has made significant strides elsewhere too. Earlier this year, Brightline achieved the feat of becoming the fastest train in the Southeast, clocking speeds of 130 mph. It also unveiled Basecamp, the most advanced train maintenance facility in the country.

Passengers booking Premium tickets have access to the Premium Lounge, complimentary snacks and beverages, priority boarding, and more.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer praised the station’s unveiling, highlighting its importance as a critical connection for the community to jobs and opportunities. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the transformative economic impact the Brightline Orlando Station will have on the region.
With the advent of Brightline’s rail service at Orlando International Airport, passenger mobility between two of Florida’s busiest regions is set to improve drastically. Kevin Thibault, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, highlighted the significance of this advancement, acknowledging Orlando International’s unique status as the only airport in the nation with an intercity high-speed passenger rail station.

While the idea was to dramatically transform Anthony’s Runway 84, preserving and creatively integrating elements of the iconic original was nonnegotiable. Much of the menu would remain the same, with a few updates and new additions, such as prime steaks and chops. The aviation-themed decor could be dialed down and reimagined but not abandoned. It now appears in the restaurant’s stylish, vintage artwork and in a sleek new logo, which appears at the host stand, in the tiled entrance flooring, on menus, cocktail napkins and on custom tableware. Red would remain a central interior color. And hundreds of framed photographs of Italian- American celebrities, sport stars and loyal customers, amassed over 40 years,
would continue to welcome guests on a Wall of Fame and help define the Runway 84 experience. From there, however, Falsetto and Fortis took a blank-slate approach.
“Mark had this vision for a place inspired by the Copa scene in Goodfellas; that’s how he first pitched it to me,” Fortis notes. “I knew exactly what he meant. But I am also a big believer in
unique brand storytelling versus just recreating a look. We needed to jump off from that inspiration and tell the Runway 84 story. I talked a lot with Anthony about what it was like growing up in New York; what it was like for him and his dad, classic New York characters, coming to South Florida in the ‘80s; about what Runway 84 represents as a gathering spot to generations of customers and how Anthony’s brought this sort of Italian-American family-dining destination to the city. I studied a lot of classic New York and Vegas restaurants and
supper clubs in the genre. The farther we got into it, the more the project grew in scope. It didn’t just need to be a beautiful space, it needed to nail the ethos of what the brand is about.”
Describing the freestanding structure itself as “like something you’d see along the highway in the mid-60s headed into Vegas,” Fortis says design discussions began with the bones of the building. Seen from the exterior, it includes a small tower feature on the roof, evoking an air traffic control tower. The layout inside featured a bar in the middle and a separate dining room. Interior features included a large airplane model suspended from the ceiling and windowless walls decorated to make guests feel like they were seated inside a fuselage.
“There was nothing that we didn’t gut,” Fortis notes. “We moved the bar, opened the space up, put in a lounge. It is a big, open space now, but it is designed as several smaller, more intimate zones. A big goal was to make sure regulars would come in and be blown away at how different it is. It couldn’t just be the old Runway with a paint job.”

John Martins Restaurant in South Florida has re-imagined the original design cues to create an unconventional yet purposeful design that evokes the love of the past and lust of the future completed by Bigtime Design.
When a venue is more than the names, they are the real life men who brought their Irish magic to South Florida and their unique vision for hospitality.
A four decade hospitality experience steeped in all things Irish. Credited as the original, (OG) Irish concept in Miami, this concept has been charged with how a legend was made. In doing so, meticulous attention was paid, and where available original millwork, and interior details have been craftly repurposed to create something distinctly original yet somehow familiar. To create an unconventional yet purposeful design that evokes the love of the past and lust of the future is the foundation of such a bold re-imagining and a key of experiential design.
The design speaks to the historic roots of the heritage while we connect with the future of tastemakers and merry makers; for foodies and laymen alike; the quintessential Irish Pub/Restaurant for today and beyond. To achieve this, attention was paid to many of the original design cues that defined the space. The snugs which are a trademark of an Irish Pub/restaurant were maintained, but the darkness and gothic detailing was replaced with more organic, lighter and whimsical styling. Tone on tone, tobacco hues combined with blackened forged steel and brick were combined with delicate graphic patterns of white, green and orange mosaic tile for the flooring. The original forty year old bar was preserved and amended to bring light and warmth to an otherwise dark space while the addition of a massive 12 foot by 5 foot industrial skylight to create a true garden experience, with a wall peppered with green moss and ivy typically only found in contemporary spaces in Ireland. The addition of green was achieved using the interior landscaping. A combination of original woodwork presented in a light and contemporary washed woods mixed with graphic traditional tile patterns and light marble.
The dried brown moss is in the shape of Ireland with pops of Kelly green. Oversized drawers were designed into the dramatic wood and steel back bar and furnishings from true to the era were repurposed and re-imagined to punctuate the design heritage that was a nod to the past. Attention to detail and combining what was, and what will be led us to create a more open floor plan while maintaining the spaces original intimacy. In the main dining room, light and semi transparent snugs are nestled under a distinctly energetic and youthful barrel vault, inspired by the casks that once housed the mash to create Irish Whisky. Blackened steel, greenery, detailed millwork and subtle graphic cues, keep the casual yet contemporary spirit. The front of the space is now an indoor/outdoor garden created to house the mammoth skylight and massive glass doors that open to Miracle Mile punctuating a true indoor/outdoor experience. Flooded with light and a sense of airiness a moss covered brick wall is bordered by contemporary portraits of John and Martin, keeping a watchful and approving eye over this decidedly unique concept.

The design of a Lower East Side-inspired restaurant in Fort Lauderdale includes a vintage color palette, custom furniture, vinyl stretch ceilings, and brass art lights designed by Bigtime Design Studios.
When you are charged with a re-imagining of an iconic concept, iconic owners and a somewhat infamous past, you work hard to preserve what was, what is and what will become. Studying the lower east side red sauce joints beginning with the floor plan, a perimeter dining approach was achieved by introducing “gangster booths” along the two main walls in the dining room. Meant for family, large groups or just because you always wanted to have a view of the dining room and entertainment these lend to an old school approach to how patrons dined when Vegas was a horse town in the dessert and Frank Sinatra was known as little Frankie and the then new Italian America was making a mark in the restaurant world.
A lively concept, and one that is immersive needed to have a color palate and tactile spirit that evoked some of the old school supper club joints that made the lower portion of Manhattan cool and Las Vegas hot. Hues of green, gold and burgundy are combined with an elaborate multi layered walnut coffered ceiling that is reminiscent of a ballroom/piano lounge at the Sands. Authentic without being a cliche was achieved by designing all custom furniture and seating to represent four generations of dining while creating a sophisticated and chic spirit. The magic of creating a space where nothing matches is because it’s all a match on the purposeful selection of a rose wall covering matched with dark emerald green velvet banquettes. A circular mini lounge was created between the bar and dining room to serve double duty, both as a natural divider for the bar and dining but to also give a lush sense of intimacy in front of the stage reminiscent of a Vegas sneak joint where a Manhattan was more than an island. Martin Scorsese could have used this as a muse for any of his movie sets depicting a true step into the Italian American subculture that was just gaining speed in 1882.
Step into the bar and above you is a vinyl stretch ceiling that is both an optical illusion and an excitement generator. What becomes of an already over scale 12 foot ceiling is now punctuated over head and the custom brass back bar and adornments are now part of the architecture enveloping your experience. Custom crystal chandeliers and brass art lights in a cacophony of light that is both intimate and sexy by design. The walls pay homage to the neighborhoods where inspiration and family are found. A touch of whimsy is also present here. Feeling more like a night out than a seat in a restaurant, we attempted to immerse the patron in a sea of colors, textures and light play. All as part of the fresh yet familiar vibe present in the four decades of existence.
